Call it screamo, skramz, post-hardcore or whatever else – it’s a sound that’s somehow endured through years of changing musical tides and is now impacting a whole new generation of underground musicians. Now Knumears’ debut album, Directions, is equal parts love letter and cartography project, one that explores the deep history of a convoluted scene while creating an exciting blueprint for a new one.

Since 2021, the Knumears (bassist Dante Garcia II, drummer Frankie Lopez, and vocalist/guitarist Matthew Cole) have been writing, touring and playing nonstop. But outside of the chaos of touring, the group found equal growth in their personal lives, strengthening old bonds with those back home, discovering new connections, and cultivating their own worlds. “All of us were kind of finding ourselves on our own and finding new relationships of all kinds,” Cole says, reflecting on the record’s development. “A lot of change was happening for each of us.” At first all of this personal upheaval was not completely conducive to writing a new album.

The band was scheduled to record with legendary producer/engineer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Loma Prieta, Touche Amore) but the band’s process felt somewhat stagnant until suddenly it wasn’t: “We were all struggling very much creativity wise,” explains Cole “We’d all found outlets in other projects while trying to write this record. But a few weeks before our time with Jack, we sat down and basically wrote the whole record. We practiced three times a week for probably a month and a half, it was practically flowing out of us.“

The result is an exceptionally urgent sounding album– even for a visceral genre like screamo. Knumears’ traffic in a sound that’s hyper-immediate yet notoriously difficult to define: it evolved from the primordial ooze of late ‘80s hardcore, earning the “post” signifier in the most literal way, then shifted in the ‘90s into something even more emotionally wrought and musically chaotic with bands like Heroin, Pg. 99, and Orchid. The sound evolved further with another boom in the late 2000s/early 2010s as Loma Prieta, Touche Amore, and more boiled the music into something more direct and even at times catchy in its own caustic way. Now Knumears and their contemporaries find themselves at the forefront of a modern screamo landscape.

Released: April 2026
Cat: RFC314LP-C5
Label: Run For Cover

Listen

Tracklist

Side A
1. Building off the strengths of their existing oeuvre, the band has developed their signature approach to grim mythmaking and scythe-swinging aggression in bold new directions, offering up a new body of songs that strike one as equal parts natural, undeniably of this world, and phantasmal.

The band's vision has grown substantially, pushing well past the tales of peasants and serfs that stood as allegories for contemporary alienation in their previous work: on this newest offering, Their previous stories of toil and dispossession are revealed to be but one chapter etched upon a bleaker tapestry, one populated by spirits traversing sunless deserts and wilted hillsides, demonic torture objects limning the edges of the psyche, bodies transfigured into Luciferian snakes, Sadean prisoners bound to the screaming silence of abandoned castle towers. The record is at once a forceful restatement of Poison Ruïn's trademark sound and a departure from it, the crackling, cassette-dubbed darkness and crushing rhythms listeners have become accustomed to buttressed by a carefully sculpted mosaic of new textures, from flourishes of Killing Joke hacksaw primitivism and blast-beats worthy of the Relapse catalogue number to crisp analog synth lines and ambient serenades reminiscent of Scott Walker and The Durutti Column. Like a serpent moving ever outward with spiraling circularity, Hymns From the Hills expands Poison Ruin's sonic landscape in imaginative new directions while maintaining its center of gravity firmly in the band’s already established mythos.

Hymns From the Hills is meticulously composed. Much like the rest of Poison Ruïn's body of work, this LP was self-recorded without the use of professional studio equipment. To meet the greater sonic demands of Hymns From the Hills, however, mastermind Mac Kennedy relocated to a private practice space, retiring from his previous routine of squeezing in tracking sessions around the rare moments that the band’s shared practice space happened to be vacant. “Having added time to breathe and really get things right felt crucial this time,” he remarks. “The stress of having to work quickly and at chaotic intervals used to feel productive in a lot of ways, in that it instilled a sort of rough, energetic ethos into the recordings, but I also started to realize that those working habits were becoming an easy way to let myself off the hook from pursuing certain ideas that required a more measured, methodical approach.” To best serve the record’s grander ambitions, the band enlisted the mixing prowess of Jonah Falco (Fucked Up, Career Suicide) and the mastering of Arthur Rizk (Power Trip, Trapped Under Ice, Cavalera, Integrity), who helped to elevate the record’s teeming variety of sounds to new heights of self-assured fidelity. Kennedy lent a second hand to the mixing process, splicing in grittier tape recorded segments in order to maintain a certain tonal continuity with the band’s previous work, creating a rich structure of unconventional frictions, crystalline flashes of polish ripping through abysses of hissing low end only to shatter against the whipping sting of rusted chains moments later.

Released: April 2026
Cat: RR76151
Label: Relapse Records

Listen

Tracklist

1. Intro
2. Lily Of The Valley
3. Hymn From The Hills
4. Because that’s what’s on offer on Diet Of Worms, the second Rocket release by The Shits, Leeds via Newcastle’s titans of disgust and deliverance. This is a feast for the senses in the worst way possible - primal rock boiled down to its essence and flung full in your face. Using repetition, tortured vocal invective and heads-down intensity as blunt instruments, these eight tracks are an unprecedented torrent of acidic salvation. Whilst lurking somewhere on the decadence-destruction axis between the nihilism of prime Stooges and the bloody blackout of Braimbombs, Diet Of Worms is possessed of a legitimately uncompromising hostility that both elevates and debases it to co-ordinates unknown.

There are revelations here in the riffage and the rancour, even if they are the kind that occur in the bleary miasma of the lock-in, or witnessing the streetlight blur of the subsequent stagger home. Even more single-minded and remorseless than the band’s Rocket debut ‘You’re A Mess’, this is a record that demands full immersion. Whether it’s ‘Then You’re Dead’ hammering on a pulverising garage-stinking riff until it begs for mercy, or ‘Change My Ways’, whose Creedence-In-Hell swagger and lurch is that of abjection transmuted into joy, this is psychedelia forcibly removed from its comfort zone of pastiche, and thrust into a bad-trip realm of the vivid and nightmarish.

Released: April 2026
Cat: LAUNCH426
Label: Rocket Recordings

Listen

Tracklist

01.
