My other grandma who I spent a lot of time with was from Puerto Rico. She had big parties where the women would all play traditional instruments and sing\/dance while the men smoked, drank and played dominos. Even though it doesn’t show in my music I really loved that as a kid.\"\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFriends got him in to emo, electronic, hip hop and, naturally due to the Ann Arbor connection, Wolf Eyes were a big thing.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"I personally got really into old country-western music because I was enamored with the sound of those old recordings and also cause of my love for Dylan, The Dead, Neil Young and The Band. It was a natural progression for me. I also really love the replacements, The Cars, Sparklehorse and Neil Hagerty’s solo work\"\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWerewolf hair began when he was 21 and he's the only person who records in it. \"I play the parts by myself at home or wherever I have my gear. There’s no real specific goal in mind, I just do what I’m able to do. However, with tracks like Tumble I had a solid vision of Aphex Twin being in a country band (haha). I’ll have different ideas like that when I start a new song\"\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThis album is a collection of songs old and new and, much like the musical styles, the recordings themselves vary greatly. And with good reason.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\"A lot of my first tape was recorded while couch surfing in Kalamazoo\/living in hotel rooms\/or staying in my girlfriends college dorm cause I was homeless for a while. I recorded a lot of those vocal parts in my car - I would drive to a Mcdonald’s parking lot or something like that and let it rip. I even did some guitar parts sitting at park benches if it wasn’t crowded. And boy has he ever. Pass the commute like I can die faster than you.’ Because no matter how much a person grapples with, realises, deeply understands, about life and their place in it, we still wake up in the morning back to square one. Life isn’t solved the minute you figure something out about it. Every Russian Circles album has had its share of new sonic vistas, and Guidance finds the band still searching out new sounds while continuing to play to the collective strengths of guitarist Mike Sullivan, drummer Dave Turncrantz, and bassist Brian Cook. We often expect artists to fall into patterns and formulas, but for Russian Circles the creative method is still a mystery. Songs develop at their own pace. Inspiration comes from strange sources. If anything, the process of writing is every bit the enigma it was back when the band crafted their first song in 2004. Life itself is a struggle with the unknown and a search for meaning, and the creative process for Russian Circles has mirrored that pursuit. The radical dynamic shifts and straightforward production of Enter, the lockstep metallic attack and pensive comedowns of Station, the symphonic grandeur of Geneva, the grit and grime of Empros, and the oscillation between melancholy and wrath on Memorial were all incremental steps towards an ideal, and Guidance brings the band that much closer to that realization. In the interim between albums, a veteran handed off an envelope of war photos to the spouse of a band member. The photos depicted a man being led to his execution. There was no context for the traumatic scenes, no history, no background. Yet the dignity this anonymous figure exuded in his fatalistic march resonated with the band. Here was someone that knew his fate and marched boldly towards his destiny. The band used these photos for the Guidance album art, knowing that we all march towards our own conclusions, and we can only hope that we face our futures with the same honor and nobility. The rhythm section of Fliss and Andi functions now on a purely intuitive level. Jim’s work now ranks with that of any guitarist in modern ‘rock’ music, not just in originality, but also across an egalitarian mass of inspiration. Each member sings. Although Robert’s voice functions as the band’s superego, Fliss takes lead in several songs. Few bands today sound as much like a single unit as do Nightingales, but this group has the bonus of a distinct and credible musical language, exemplified by The Desperate Quartet, which comes across as both a medieval war march and the anthem of looming apocalypse. After five months of not picking up an instrument, The Dead Tongues’ Ryan Gustafson wanted to get rid of everything that was tied to his identity as a musician. He even thought about changing his name. He was getting ready to throw out old notebooks packed with years of material but, for some reason, he decided to stop and go through them, just to see if there was anything worth saving. And sure enough, he found some images and lyrics, threads from former selves he didn’t want to lose. Thus was the catalyst for\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eDust\u003c\/i\u003e, his fifth and best album as The Dead Tongues.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGustafson recorded\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003ci\u003eDust\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ein nine days, the fastest he’d ever recorded anything. It was the fastest he’d ever written anything, too – in the past, writing a song would take months, but this time he somehow felt freer, and wanted to have fun. The record was recorded at Sylvan Esso’s studio, Betty’s, in the woods of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He built it out with help from a number of his musician friends - Joe Westerlund (Watchhouse, Megafaun, Califone) on drums, Andrew Marlin (Watchhouse) on mandolin, backing vocals from Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Molly Sarlé of Mountain Man, among others.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"st__content-block st__content-block--text\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003ci\u003eDust\u003c\/i\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eis meant to be listened to while taking a night drive, farflung and roving and existential. Gustafson explains the thematic throughline succinctly: “It’s this idea of uprooting and rebirth and cycles, and the past informing the future, and the future informing the past. There is no single story. Songwriter Tyler Jordan grew up in a South Texas coastal town dominated by the petrochemical industry, his childhood steeped in the tension between nature and industry, exploitation abundantly present and the wealth gap on full display. They began playing in bands together, backing up other songwriters and taking turns in the spotlight.
