Batman Returns (Original Motion Picture Score)
Danny Elfman has been writing music since the early 70s, well known for his work on a stream of famous films such as Sweeney Todd, Spider-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Justice League. He can often be seen working with Tim Burton, with Burton having given Elfman his first big break in the industry with the score of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
Batman Returns OMPS compliments the film perfectly. It’s dark and whimsical, often full of suspense and changes its pace frequently. It relies heavily on the use of harps, woodwinds, strings and horns, which are at times light and jumpy but can quickly shift into tones of malevolence.
Traces of the iconic Batman theme can be heard throughout, most notably on ‘Batman Vs. The Circus’, but overall the dominating tone is fantasy, a mixture of dreams and nightmares which are a well-known quality in almost all Tim Burton films.
This soundtrack outshines the film with an impressive assortment of instruments that create a delicate balance of malevolence, romance (‘Selena Transforms’) and whimsy. It can be purchased on double 12”vinyl to be enjoyed alongside or apart from the film, keep a look out for the gothic pop finale, ‘The End Credits’.
