Fever is the sixth solo rap album from Detroit-born rapper and producer, Black Milk. Known for his unique sound and innovative production, Fever follows Black Milk’s live recorded instrumental album, The Rebellion Sessions (2016).
The album features many accomplished session players, including; Chris “Daddy” Dave (D'Angelo, Adele, Justin Bieber) and Daru Jones (Jack White); long-time collaborator and bassist Malik Hunter; and newcomers, Ian Fink on keys and Sasha Kashperko on guitar and bass.
Black Milk’s style has evolved, fusing the live jazz band sound from The Rebellion Sessions with hip-hop and soul. Starring the voice of electronic dream-pop songwriter, Sudie, the track ‘unVEil’ opens the album with a sleazy hip-hop vibe. ‘But I Can Be’ is reminiscent of earlier work, with a traditional Black Milk beat. The groovy bass and ornamental guitar and synth on ‘Could It Be,’ and the live feel of ‘True Lies’ reinforce Black Milk’s hip-hop-jazz evolution.
At the centre of the record, ‘eVE,’ is a wandering instrumental, of interweaving synths and reverberating guitar. ‘Drown’, ‘DiVE’ and ‘Foe Friend’ have old school inspired dance grooves. Fever is an impressive hip-hop soundscape, which is available as a black and red marbled double 12” vinyl, plus a collectible poster.
