It’s been over 20 years since Embrace introduced themselves to the world with their debut release, The Good Will Out. Love is a Basic Need is their new 7th album, managing to take us back to that time of classic indie anthems of the 90s. Embrace were very much a part of this, and magically, it shows.

Fans of the band will delight at the fact that Embrace appear to have indeed gone back to their roots. Love is a Basic Need is a 10-track indie pop journey that is unafraid to mix things up too. ‘All That Remains’ is a wonderful string-laden ballad, while ‘The Finish Line’ is a powerful and emotional track that lyrically shows the band’s development. ‘Never’ encapsulates this even further.

The title track sets the tone for the whole album; it is heartfelt and sincere. The chorus is a choir backed highlight that epitomises Love is a Basic Need’s overriding theme of surrounding love and positivity.

Lead singer Danny McNamara commented that we must “live life to the full and squeeze the most out of it”. Love is a Basic Need as a whole certainly succeeds in doing just that. This is essential listening. Embrace.
