Anything but dance music of course, this collaboration from Grant and Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit, Justin Lockey of Editors and James Lockey of Minor Victories, is a straightforward, rawkus rock record. It is college rock circa American Pie with its themes of anxiety and basically getting everything fucking wrong.
Hutchison cites Idlewild, Nirvana and Hundred Reasons as key influences for the Mastersystem project and upon listening these influences are as brazen as is possible. ‘The Enlightenment’ is a tweaked blueprint of Idlewild’s ‘A Modern Way Of Letting Go’, while standout track ‘Notes On A Life Not Quite Lived’ is a staggeringly fantastic, straight-up Hundred Reasons offshoot; a tale of ideas above their stations and wrestling with “the ways in which I am not quite doing life right”, notes Scott Hutchison.
A real counterpoint to the Elbow-come-Twilight Sad wails of day job Frightened Rabbit, the Hutchison’s have pulled off a spectacular sideways move.
