New Jersey stoners Monster Magnet return with their 10th album Mindfucker, their first in fact, since 2013. This 10-track offering is what MM fans have been waiting for – both a step forward and backwards in time.
The cosmic blues, punk and foot stomping power that the band are known for is here in abundance, so much so that by the time we reach the closing track, ‘When The Hammer Comes Down’, we feel as if we’ve been thrown off a cliff and then finished off with an extra dose of slamming riffs to boot.
Title track ‘Mindfucker’ coaxes us through a trippy, hallucinogenic kaleidoscope, equalled only by favourite ‘Want Some?’, which feels like a cool trip in a galaxy space cruiser.
Mindfucker shows off the band’s full range of classic sounds too, opening track ‘Rocket Freak’, being a great example. ‘Soul’ lays on the power further, a riff-laden jam that’s classic Monster Magnet in every way.
This album is beautiful and insane, it is predictable and unexpected, it charms us into the enjoyment of feeling the punches. Mindfucker unashamedly turns our skinny jeans into bellbottoms. Most importantly, it’s Monster Magnet at their very best. Don’t miss out on the ride.
