Coming hot on the heels of 2016’s Away, Okkervil River return with what has been billed as the group’s most immediate and meaningful album to date.

These 10 songs, veering into areas of vibrant, classic pop and pumped up Americana show frontman Will Sheff at his true best. This is music that’s hopeful, healing and uplifting. Lead single ‘Don’t Move To LA’ is a twangy cruiser that echoes sounds of a 1960’s Dylan. Indeed, Sheff is joined on In The Rainbow Rain by most of his recent touring group, togetherness all too apparent throughout the album.

Fortunately for me, the new album still contains wonderfully dark and sombre acoustic tones, but on the whole, this is much more positive. It’s upbeat, and it’s infectious. Booming synths and ambient backing vocals combine with electronic guitars to produce material that is emotionally exposed, heart-warming and most importantly, relatable. This added colour to the experience provides a much broader, mature product that works perfectly.

Final track of note, ‘Pulled up the Ribbon’ finishes the job. It’s buoyant, playful and vulnerable.

When I heard about a new Okkervil River record, I had really high hopes, but this is better. Hooray for me. And you.
