Persona is the dynamic new album from Ryan Lee West, aka Rival Consoles.
As the title implies, the album explores themes of the persona, and contemplates the chasm between how we see ourselves, and how others see us.
The thoughtful album follows West’s Odyssey and Sonne EPs, his LP Howl, and 2016’s mini album Night Melody.
Persona brings more of the same shoegazey combination of synthesisers, electronica and acoustic elements Rival Consoles has offered previously, but this time it all rings with a newfound confidence.
Recorded at West’s studio in southeast London, Persona offers a range of moody, emotive tracks. ‘Untravel’ conveys an eerie sense of wonder, while opening track ‘Unfolding’ is delightfully atmospheric from start to finish.
This new offering from Rival Consoles highlights West’s ability to go beyond typical electronic production, allowing him to create a distinctly unique sound that is entirely his own – no small feat in instrumental-electronic music, a genre where tracks are often derided as “samey.”
That isn’t something listeners have to worry about here. Persona offers a vibrant collection of tracks, sure to reverberate in the mind long after the final listen.
