Son Lux is an American band born out of Los Angeles in 2008. Formed by lead vocalist Ryan Lott, he is joined by Rafiq Bhatia on guitar and Ian Chang on the drums. The band have described themselves in the past as being “genre-less” and this can definitely be seen in the huge variety of sounds and experimentalism in their music.
Brighter Wounds is their fifth studio album and it’s their most daring project yet. It explores a multitude of different sounds from avant-garde percussions and progressive pop balladry, to mournful, slow piano pieces.
Son Lux is a band that’s well known for taking risks with their music and Brighter Wounds is a risk that has paid off. There are so many different elements at play – horns, pianos, guitars and bass to name just a few – that as whole it shouldn’t work and yet, it does. This is an album that defies expectations, and with more layers to explore than an onion, it’s well worth your time.
