Twerp Verse is the third album from off-kilter Massachusetts quartet Speedy Ortiz and follows in the white hot footprints of 2015’s acclaimed Foil Deer.
Interestingly Twerp Verse is actually Ortiz’ second go at a new record; the originally intended record scrapped following 2017’s US election, with lead vocalist and guitarist Sadie Dupuis expressing that the original “personal or lovey dovey” tracks “just didn’t mean anything to me anymore” in the aftermath of the 2017 political maelstrom.
As clever a poetic social commentator as we’ve had in recent times, Dupuis had to re-work the album, instead necessitated to focus attention on a weary and uncertain world of old guards, movie monsters and war-mongers. As Dupuis does so intelligently though, the themes are conveyed cleverly and jeeringly without ever becoming imperious or dictatorial.
Standout track ‘Villain’ allegedly tackles the deep-lying issue of harassment and sexual abuse, and yet addressing a sensitive subject still manages to work against an incredible off-beat, scruffy choppy chunk of gunge and indie.
Out on Carpark Records, Twerp Verse is available as a deluxe edition pink coloured vinyl with rainbow splatter, including a bonus 7” vinyl.
