The album cover to this album from Thick Syrup looks bleak, it’s a typically 1970’s multi-storey car park (I think!), presumably in Leeds and presumably with some relevance to one of the band members.

However, slide out the impressive orange vinyl and put it on your turntable and it’s anything but bleak. This album is riff heavy with impressive vocals from lead singer Gemma Fleet and well curated back up from some clearly talented musicians.

Opening track ‘Jennifer’ is a strong start and sounds like it could be a recording from an established Seattle grunge band. Follow this up with ‘Heavy Syrup’, which could easily be called ‘Heavy Bass’ given it’s opening bass licks and you know that this short 8-track album is going to be one that you will probably listen to whilst getting in the mood for a lively evening.

If Living In Leeds sounds like this, then get me on the next Transpenine Express!
