Hard on the heels of last year’s eponymously titled Ty Segall, the man returns with his new album, Freedom’s Goblin.

Segall’s prolific approach to song writing has this time produced an epic 19 track double album that, even by Segall’s high standards, is as free ranging as it is ambitious.

It seems that Segall actually needed the one hour and fifteen minutes he’s used here, to squeeze in material that eventually feels like a scrapbook of musical styles and personal guises.

Notable highlights of the album, the excellent power pop of ‘5 ft. Tall’ and the anarchic metal on ‘She’, are great examples of the extent of the variation in the album’s content. Freedom’s Goblin has drum machines, it has both Garage and Folk Rock, even Grunge. There are hooks abound, varied and wonderful lyrics, and even an opening track (‘Fanny Dog’) that is dedicated to Segall’s own dog.

Although the album oozes with vibes of love and positivity, it is in keeping with Freedom’s Goblin’s range, that it closes with the sobering 12 minute epic ‘And, Goodnight’.

Available on double 12” vinyl, this is Ty Segall at his best - a celebration of his aesthetic and emotional freedom. Excellent.
