If Kavinksy's 2013 debut OutRun is the soundtrack of a 24 year old stealing the keys to his step-dad's Ferrari Testarossa and high-tailing it around town... then Reborn is the soundtrack of that same step-dad coming home and taking an evening drive around coastal roads, pondering his life-choices.
Where OutRun felt like a collection of varied tracks, experimenting with slightly different styles and approaches, Reborn is a coherent and consistent end-to-end record from an artist who has found his groove and is now ready to sit in it.
While Reborn doesn't quite have the single-track impact of a Nightcall or Testarossa Autodrive, it also doesn't suffer from the same weak spots as it's 2013 predecessor.
The start-to-finish flow of Reborn is a level beyond almost anything in the synth-pop/synthwave world since M83's "Before the Dawn Heals Us". Tracks like Plasma, Renegade, and the title track (Reborn) all inject big sing-along melodies and hooks, which leap out from the background of slower moodier tracks, and comfortably hold their own against Kavinsky's contemporaries like Daft Punk, Justice and M83.
Reborn is without a doubt a record which is at it's most rewarding when listened to end-to-end. Kavinsky's ability to shift gear and change pace and mood, which was certainly present on OutRun, is honed and perfectly tuned on Reborn.
Nine years is a long time to hang on for a follow-up, but Reborn is well worth the wait. Kavinsky has brought something really special together here, and has delivered an album which may very well be the best synthwave record made to date.
