Losing Count is the first solo album from Gift Wrap, also known as Brooklyn punk, Brendon Avalos. Ordinarily one-third of the trio, B Boys: Losing Count is Avalos’s debut masterpiece. The album is the culmination of a personal goal to realise a complete collection of original work: “Artistically, I think the sole purpose of this record was to just do everything. An exercise in realizing a full concept without seeing what the end result would be.”
Emerging from this project is a buzzing, experimental-pop album of thirteen-tracks of unexpectedly danceable loner-pop. The title track is suggestive of Depeche Mode and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, with 80s style processing on Avalos’s vocals, and the mesmerizing looped layers of synth and guitar. ‘Losing Count’ hints towards the anxiety that can surround daily tasks.
The album was recorded, mixed, and produced in New York by Avalos, and mastered by Carl Saff. Avalos shares writing credits with Jess Hutchison on the tracks 'Present', 'Past', 'Future', and 'The Situation' instrumental. ‘I Cry’ was written by Greg Broussard.
The imaginative layering of looped instruments with found sounds, old radio samples only adds to the albums punk aesthetic. Losing Count is available as a 12” vinyl.
